WIRIKUTA, THE WAR OF GODS- 2012
The Huichol, also called Wixárikas, Wixáricas or Wixáritari, are an indigenous people living in the Sierra Madre Occidental in west-central Mexico, mainly in the states of Jalisco, Nayarit, Zacatecas and Durango. In Wixarica mythology, Wirikuta corresponds to the place where the world was created. This site, with an area of 140,212 hectares, near the village of Real de Catorce, is located between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the mountains of the state of Zacatecas. Thanks to its mythological importance, Wirikuta is a place of pilgrimage and a tourist center. Wirikuta is also known to be a point of consumption of the peyote cactus, which is said to cause hallucinations.
When I photographed this land, it was threatened by gold and silver mining projects: in fact, the Mexican government sold concessions corresponding to part of this site, despite protests from the Huichol tribes. Two projects in particular would concern the exploitation of lots located on the Wirikuta site by Canadian companies. Resistance was put up by representatives of the Wixarica people and Mexican intelligentsia.
The project ultimately didn't come to fruition, but until when? Today, the fight continues for the Wixaricas. Tomato concessions plant their greenhouses on this sacred land. The fight has only just begun...

Les Huichol, aussi appelés Wixárikas, Wixáricas ou Wixáritari, sont un peuple indigène vivant dans la Sierra Madre occidentale au centre-ouest du Mexique, principalement dans les états de Jalisco, Nayarit, Zacatecas et Durango. Dans la mythologie wixarica, Wirikuta correspond à l'endroit où fut créé le monde. Ce site, d'une superficie de 140 212 hectares, proche du village Real de Catorce, est situé entre la Sierra Madre occidentale et les montagnes de l'état de Zacatecas.Grâce à son importance mythologique, Wirikuta est un lieu de pèlerinage et un centre touristique.Wirikuta est aussi connu pour être un point de consommation du cactus peyotl, qui provoquerait des hallucinations.
Quand j'ai photographié cette terre, elle était menacée par des projets d'extractions minières d'or et d'argent : en effet, le gouvernement mexicain a vendu des concessions correspondant à une partie de ce site, malgré les protestations des tribus huichols. Deux projets en particulier concerneraient l'exploitation de lots situés sur le site de Wirikuta par des sociétés canadiennes. Une résistance a été mise en place par des représentants du peuple wixarica et l'intellengencia mexicaine.
Le projet n'a pas finalement pas abouti mais jusque quand ? Aujourd'hui, la lutte continue pour les Wixaricas. Des concessions de tomates plantent leurs serres sur cette terre sacrée. La lutte ne fait que commencer.
